Coghlan Orthodontics is a 3rd-generation, family-owned practice founded by Dr. Charles V. Coghlan and serving the Bloomington community since 1968. Dr. Coghlan, affectionately called Dr. C by his patients and staff, earned his dental degree from the University of Louisville in 1964, served two years as a dental officer in the U.S. Army, and completed his orthodontic training at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. He then moved his family to Bloomington, where he opened the original Coghlan Orthodontics, located on the Southeast corner of 3rd St. and Grant St. in downtown Bloomington. In 1976, Dr. C. moved the office to Auto Mall Rd. on the Southeast side of town, where the closest neighbors were grazing cows to the south. Dr. Kevin, Dr. C's son, worked at this office during his summers in high school and college, which inspired him to follow in his father's footsteps. Dr. Kevin completed his dental and orthodontic training at the Indiana University School of Dentistry and officially joined Coghlan Orthodontics in 1989. In 1992, Coghlan Orthodontics moved to our current location and enlisted another member of the Coghlan family, Michael Coghlan, architect and Dr. Kevin's older brother, to design the new building - a true Coghlan collaboration! Our 3rd generation, Dr. Kevin's daughter, Dr. Sarah M. Coghlan, joined the practice in 2026 after completing her dental training at Indiana University School of Dentistry and her orthodontic training at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Sarah grew up with Dr. C and Dr. Kevin as role models and was inspired to pursue orthodontics because of them. Today, both Dr. Kevin and Dr. Sarah find so much joy in seeing the children and grandchildren of Dr. C's original patients (and now Dr. Kevin's too), as it reminds them they are continuing Dr. C's legacy of "Creating Healthy Hoosier Smiles since 1968".
